Bill Buxton is the Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, conducting both basic and applied research in computer science and software engineering to enhance user experience, invent novel computing technologies and reduce the cost of writing and maintaining software. Prior to his appointment, Bill helped establish a new satellite of Xerox's Palo Alto Research Centre, was a scientific director of the Ontario Telepresence Project, and was the scientific director of Alias|Wavefront (now Autodesk) and its parent company SGI Inc. He has also taught in the Department of Industrial Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design and at the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto.

For six years he was on the board of the Canadian Film Centre, and spent two years chairing a panel to advise the Premier of Ontario on developing long-term policy to foster innovation, through the Ontario Jobs and Investment Board.

Bill holds a bachelor of music from Queen’s University, studied and taught for two years at the Institute of Sonology in Holland, and received a master’s in computer science from the University of Toronto. Three additional schools have awarded him with honourary doctorates.
